What is a round green fruit that is a member of the gourd family and is primarily grown in Northern Thailand and China? You may have guessed it from the title of this article, but the answer is monk fruit!

Monk fruit, also known as Luo Han Guo, is a sweet fruit that naturally contains zero calories, carbs, and sugar. The fruits are cultivated for their sweet compounds, which are antioxidants called mogrosides. The sweetest of these compounds is known as mogroside V, which is naturally much sweeter than sucrose (regular sugar).

Monk fruit extract is 100% natural. It is made by taking the whole fruit, crushing it, and steeping it in water. The resulting juice is then filtered, leaving behind mogrosides. Next, it is dehydrated, producing a pure concentrated extract with natural honey-like sweetness and zero aftertaste.

Monk fruit is unique in that it is one of the only two natural sweeteners to gain GRA status by the FDA - which stands for generally recognized as safe. The other natural sweetener that gained this status is stevia. This is an essential distinction because other zero-calorie sweeteners are produced in a lab and are not found in nature, such as sucralose, aspartame, saccharin, neotame, advantame, and more.

Today, we are incredibly fortunate to have two excellent options to naturally sweeten our food and drinks and keep our bodies running on good, clean ingredients without adding any calories. MonkVee offers a Pure Monk Fruit Extract and a Pure Stevia Extract, and other 1:1 sugar replacement products made with a monk fruit and erythritol blend. So, we have options for everyone!
